Sofia Souto
Earth Observation Projects Officer
Sofia Souto has a Master in Geosciences – Geological Resources Valorization from the University of Minho, having attended Universität Bremen for seven months under the Erasmus+ programme. While an undergraduate student, she recognised the need for the application of remote sensing in the study of Earth and her continuous fascination for our Planet took her to the Winter School on Sustainable Mineral Exploration, Huelva (Spain), where she was exposed for the first time to Copernicus, the Earth Observation programme promoted by the European Union. Since then she has deepened her knowledge of this programme.
She worked as a field geologist, later as an intern at the Land Resources Unit (D3) at the Joint Research Centre (European Commission, Italy). Currently, she is the junior Earth Observation projects officer at the Portuguese Space Agency, where she seeks to combine science and technology with industry. In her childhood, she observed space from Earth and wondered how everything was formed, now she studies Earth from space.
Whenever possible, she escapes to one of the Portuguese mountains, immerses herself in books or plans her next adventure.
