Portugal focuses on “clean Oceans with clean Space” at the 3rd New Space Atlantic Summit
The New Space Atlantic Summit is going virtual. The 3rd edition happens on 30th October 2020 with a special focus on how the Atlantic region can use Space technologies and data to ensure “clean Oceans with clean Space”.
On the 30th October 2020, the Portuguese Space Agency is hosting the 3rd New Space Atlantic Summit. This year’s edition, which will be a purely virtual conference, lasting from 09:00-17:00 Lisbon time, will have a special focus on how the Atlantic region can use its space capacities to ensure “clean Oceans with clean Space”.
The theme of the Summit invited participants, key players active in the Atlantic area, to debate the importance of Space for the Atlantic region, a Blue World. Discussions will focus on how we can use Space to preserve, manage and utilise our marine resources and ecosystems, monitor for safety and security, use geolocation services for transportation, and, of course, the applications for science. Space is also a vital tool in keeping us united and avoiding isolation in areas that are remote or of difficult access.
At the same time, in order to ensure that we can properly and effectively use our space assets to provide these services and reach these goals, it is clear that we need to retain our ability to access and utilise space, increasingly cluttered by debris, in a sustainable manner. As such, the sustainable use of Space will also be discussed.
The Summit is organised with key partner Business Bridge Europe, and with the prestigious patronage of the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education.
Confirmed speakers include Portuguese Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education Manuel Heitor, Portuguese Minister of the Sea Ricardo Santos, Portugal Space President Ricardo Conde, ESA Director-General Jan-Dietrich Wörner, Brazilian Space Agency President Carlos Moura, and UNSG Special Envoy for the Ocean Ambassador Peter Thomson, as well as many industry and research representatives from the Atlantic world.
