The Azores host a premiere of “The Space Between” with Andreas Mogensen

The Portuguese Space Agency is associated with the director of “José e Pilar” and “O Labirinto da Saudade” for the national premiere, on the island of Santa Maria, of the film “The Space Between”, a portrait of Danish astronaut Andreas Mogensen, which follows the preparation of the astronaut's first mission at the helm of the International Space Station.

On September 20th, at 9 pm, the Atlântica Cine in Vila do Porto, in the Azores, will host the pre-release of the film “The Space Between Us”, a documentary directed by Miguel Gonçalves Mendes and centred on Andreas Mogensen’s first mission as commander of the International Space Station, in 2015. The pre-release session, open to the community and with free entry, is part of the programme for the final phase of the Astronaut for a Day initiative, promoted by the Portuguese Space Agency.

The Danish astronaut, who studied Aerospace Engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, will answer questions from the public about his experience of living and working in space. Andreas Mogensen will also be in the Azores to accompany the parabolic flight of the 30 Astronaut for a Day finalists on September 21st.

“Bringing the pre-release of The Space Between Us to Santa Maria is a symbol of the role we assign to the Portuguese Space Agency: linking different fields of knowledge, science, and culture, integrating art into a dialogue that brings people closer to space and its transformative potential,” says Ricardo Conde, President of the Portuguese Space Agency.

“The Space Between” is the first film to be screened from the film project “O Sentido da Vida” (“The Meaning of Life”), an odyssey of more than 10 years of filming that culminated in nine feature films (to be distributed by NOS Cinemas) among which are the main film “Sentido da Vida” and a series, both for RTP.

The main film tells the story of Giovane Brisotto, a Brazilian young man suffering from a rare and incurable disease of Portuguese origin, which spread across five continents during the period of the great navigations. Seeking the meaning of life, Giovane retraces the route on which the disease spread 500 years ago and crosses paths with seven public figures who guide him. One of them is the Danish astronaut Andreas Mogensen.

“This project is based on a kaleidoscope of contemporary characters who invite us to reflect on what makes us humans unique beings,” says director Miguel Gonçalves Mendes.

“O Sentido da Vida” further features Portuguese writer Valter Hugo Mãe, human rights lawyer Baltasar Garzón, Japanese plastic artist Mariko Mori, Icelandic composer Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, and Brazilian politicians Marina Silva and Dilma – eight personalities with an international dimension who take on the role of mirrors and archetypes of humanity in the way they deal with art, science, spirituality, universal justice, and the future.
