Portuguese Space Agency promotes national ecosystem in Japan

The Portuguese Space Agency will be present at Expo 2025 in Osaka with the "Space Diving" exhibition, on display at the Portuguese Pavilion.
The Agency will also participate in a forum held at the Portuguese Embassy in Tokyo.

The Portuguese Space Agency will be present in Japan in August with an agenda that combines space diplomacy, economic promotion, and international projection of the national science and technology ecosystem. The participation begins in Osaka, with the Space Diving exhibition, on display from August 5th to 7th at the Portugal Pavilion at Expo 2025 OSAKA, and continues in Tokyo at the Portugal Economic Forum – Portugal’s Role in the Future of Aerospace and Defence in Europe.

In Osaka, the Space Diving exhibition, on display from August 5th to 7th at the Portugal Pavilion, invites visitors to dive between two worlds: the ocean and space. This exhibition offers a journey that begins at the International Space Station, where scientific experiments are conducted with Portuguese participation, and continues with the observation of Earth through satellites that help protect biodiversity both on land and at sea.

The exposition further includes underwater images that demonstrate the use of satellite communication for the preservation of marine species and analogous missions carried out in submarines, such as the one that brings together the Portuguese Space Agency, the Portuguese Navy, and the European Space Agency, which studies the human body’s response to situations of isolation, confinement, and pressure. Throughout the course, the connection between science, sustainability, and international cooperation is highlighted, showcasing how knowledge developed for space can be applied to the preservation of the planet.

In preparing the exhibition, the Portuguese Space Agency benefited from the collaboration of the research group at the Okeanos Institute, from the University of the Azores, as well as Blue Insight, Geosat, and JAXA.

The presence of the Portuguese Space Agency and the space sector in Japan culminates in the Portugal Economic Forum – Portugal’s Role in the Future of Aerospace and Defence in Europe, which will take place on August 8th at the Portuguese Embassy in Tokyo.

Organised by AICEP and the Portuguese Embassy in Japan, this forum is aimed at Japanese strategic partners and decision-makers, bringing together representatives from Portuguese entities and companies operating in the space and defence sectors.

The Portuguese Space Agency, which coordinated the participation of Portuguese entities, will be represented by its Executive Director, Hugo André Costa, who will speak about the national ecosystem. Newspace Portugal, Tekever, and EID will also participate, and JAXA, the Japanese space agency, is expected to attend as well.
